The Process!

Hi! Thank you for viewing my art process! Each piece is an original piece of art created by myself.

The Zentangle inspired art pieces are created with a blank white piece of fabric. Temporary lines are drawn as the base of my art planning. Then I free-hand everything else with black ink and add color with ink or paint.

Once the ink and color are done, I add cotton batting and quilt the piece, sew a fabric border and staple it to a stretched canvas frame.

The photo quilts start with a photo that I have taken of scenes around our Buffalo, NY area. I create my pattern by tracing the colors, shades, and shapes on the picture, enlarge it to the size I want. Using this paper pattern, I cut the big shapes out of fabric and glue each piece on, then sew around each piece to secure the fabric to the base of the quilt.

Then the fun part comes! Painting brings out the specific color that I want as well as the fine details that I cannot achieve with fabric. Lastly, each piece is quilted, sewn fabric border, and stapled onto the stretched canvas frame.

Little known fact……My dad was an upholsterer and he taught me some of the upholstery skills like using a staple gun that I still use today!

My pocket hugs started in January 2021 during the Pandemic. I saw that other people were making this same basic idea of showing someone you care by sending them a token they can touch and hold.

Mine turned out to also include words of positivity and gratitude as well as the Zentangle inspired artwork I draw on each one. Some of these photos show the temporary registration marks that I place on the fabric to guide me. These marks are removed.

Below are more photos and videos of me creating my pieces. Enjoy each one, and thank you again for viewing my work! Please leave a comment and tell me your thoughts!

Part of my drawing process! If only I could draw this fast in real time!

Thank you once again for viewing all of the photos and videos. If you have any questions about my work and/or would like to purchase a piece or have a custom piece made, please contact me.

Guild Competition!

This week I’m starting on a challenge that is through one of my Quilt Guilds. Their challenge is to choose an envelope that had two crayons (I did not know what colors I was choosing). Create a quilt using these two colors and add up to four more colors.

I received BLUE and BLUE/GREEN.

I came up with drawing rings on white fabric, add designs in the rings, painting the fabric with the colors.

And the following photos are my process thus far. Quilting will begin tomorrow. It’s due December 4 at our Christmas party.

Enjoy the photos!

Inclusion!

I started this about 2 years ago for another competition which had the word converge as it’s theme.  Well, life happened and prevented me from completing it on time.

When I saw the verb definition of converge, it said something to the effect of…two or more people coming together for a common good.  That lead me to think of the world today and how there’s so much negativity towards another human due to the color of their skin, beliefs, or abilities.  God made all of us in his image. I am only a part of his image as is every other human on this planet.  (I choose God, you may say higher power, higher energy, etc.)

My point is that this world would be much more pleasant if we all accepted each other’s individualities.

This is not complete yet, and it will be completed by October 1.  This will be entered into the AQS shows for 2020.

Thank you for reading my blog!

Have a Wonderful Day!

Time to Re-Focus!!

I am sew embarrassed that I have two wedding gifts from 2 years ago that I have not completed.  Sew, for the next few weeks, I am going to complete these gifts and give them!  This is going to give me a good focus on the work I have to do now.  I just started painting the fabric.  I am planning on finishing this by the end of this week, and I can give it to the happy couple (my cousin). The photo in the middle is the quilt at the end of the painting stage.  The original photo is on the far right.  Next step is to quilt it and frame it.

The other part of this is that my work area is totally messy.  I am focusing on re-organizing this space to get ready for a litany of projects I have to complete by the end of the year.

Since my teaching experience at AQS in April, I have decided to focus on teaching and competition quilts; andI will of course take any commissioned quilt work that comes along.  This allows me to have a very specific focus that I could market and expand on!

Thank you for reading this post!  I would love to read your comments!

My PAPA’S DOOR has been accepted in AQS Grand Rapids, Fall Paducah, and Des Moines shows for this year!  These are all international quilt shows and only 272 quilts have been accepted as semi-finalists.  This is the first time I am showing at a national competition of any kind!  I’m so excited to see comments of the judges.

This quilt is my first quilt that is one piece of white fabric and totally painted first then quilted.

If you go to see any of these AQS shows, please look for Papa’s Door and tell me how you like it!!

Colors

Aimg_3467s an artist, I work with different colors, hues, and shades to bring my art to life.

A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to do an art presentation for my church.  They are doing a lenten series on Spirit, Health, & Healing.  I had no other guidance as to what was expected other than some sort of artsy thing.  Of course, I said YES with absolutely no idea of what I was going to do or even talk about!

Within 1-1/2 weeks of constant meditating on this, I came up with the puzzle pieces one by one.  It started with how color effects our emotions and mood.  Ok….I would ask myself….”How do I tie this into the Bible and our faith?  And, What hands-on project am I going to do in a 30 minute session?”

Then with my trusty computer in hand, I searched the internet for the meaning of colors and then verses in the Bible for each color.  The only one I knew at that time was in the book of Genesis mentioning the Rainbow.

That showed me the colors I am going to work with, meanings, and connection to the Bible and our faith.  What am I going to do for a hands-on project (remember in 30min). The stipulation was to use all the colors in the Rainbow.

I toyed with Rainbow?  A Cross?  None of these seemed to really fit what I was trying to achieve.  Then I was in Mass on Sunday and suddenly a picture came into mind of a meadow, blue sky, sun, clouds, and crosses (image above).  So I completed the sample and decided that I am not going to show them this until the very end.  I will do one with them to illustrate where I want them to place the color.

The Holy Spirit really helped me in putting this together!  I wish I was an attendee rather than a presenter to enjoy it, however, I will enjoy presenting it as well!

Tuesday, April 4 at 6pm is when I am presenting it at the UB Newman Center in Amherst, New York. Please join us if you can!!

Ready for the Super Bowl!!

fullsizeoutput_d50

I’m not really a big sports fan (I do watch the occasional Buffalo Bills Games).  I always look forward to the Super Bowl because we get together with our friends in the neighborhood that I don’t always see!  It is always an awesome time.

There’s lots of food and squares to bet (I really don’t know how this works or what the official term is), and I always bring a prize to donate to the square raffle.  I painted these this year.  A little different than my usual quilt stuff.

I discovered that Enamel paints can be put on glass as long as it is not touching the mouth (hence the placement of the paint).  It also can be put in the oven for a period of time to bake the paint on and make it dishwasher safe.

Amazing what technology has come up with for the home crafter!

Have an amazing day!
